Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s chief patron Taufik Kiemas said on Monday that his wife — party chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri — and Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo should not join next year’s presidential race.
While recent poll results by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) revealed that Megawati, from the party known as PDI-P, was the most favored presidential candidate and Joko topped the vice presidential poll, Taufik said it was too soon for the governor to leave his position in Jakarta.
“Not now for Jokowi [Joko Widodo]. Take pity on him. Let him first complete his duty [leading Jakarta],” Taufiik said.
“Jokowi himself told me when I talked to him; how would he join [the presidential race] when he [has only become the Jakarta governor] for three months. He just left Solo, he couldn’t leave Jakarta, too,” said Taufik, the speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR).
As for his wife Megawati, who was the president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004, Taufik said she would be better off making the decisions behind the scenes, rather than joining the race again.
“She can give the place to other people; she’ll be better off as a king maker,” Taufik said.
