Bogor police say that a 27-year-old woman killed her newborn baby by drowning it in a river.
Comr. Djumangin, the chief of the Leuwiliang subprecinct police, said on Sunday that Dewi Letyaningsih confessed to the crime earlier this month, saying she was ashamed of having a child out of wedlock.
The baby’s body was found floating in the Cikaniki River on April 9 by residents of Karehkel village, where Dewi lived. Djumangin said she claimed to have been impregnated by a trash picker, despite having plans to marry her boyfriend, Asman, in May. She hid her pregnancy by wearing baggy clothes. Dewi faces murder charges that carry up to 15 years in prison.
