A bomb that exploded at a mosque inside the compound of Cirebon Police Headquarters shortly after Friday prayers was a suicide attack, police said.

“It was a suicide attack and the perpetrator died,” National Police Spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bahcrul Alam said.

Seventeen police officers were injured in the incident, including the Cirebon Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr Herukoco.

A source at the National Police counterterrorism squad, Densus 88, told the Jakarta Globe that it was likely to be a terrorist attack.

“Based on a the preliminary report we have had from the field it’s most likely to be a terrorist attack because there was shrapnel,” the source said.

“The report also says that there was a dead body in the mosque yard. We’re afraid it was a suicide bomb.”

Previously, West Java Police had only confirmed that it was a bomb.

“It was a bomb that exploded,” West Java Police spokesman Chief Comr. Agus Riyanto said. “But I need time to gather more information,” he said when asked whether anyone had died in the attack.

It is not the first bomb attack at a Cirebon mosque.

Last February, a home-made bomb was found at Sang Cipta Rasa Mosque in the Kasepuhan Palace compound. The bomb was wrapped in a plastic bag and was made of gasoline, thumb-sized firecrackers, shards and a timer. No one was injured.
