The flight data recorder from the Sukhoi Superjet 100 that crashed into Mount Salak on May 9 was found by local people on Wednesday.
“Local people found the FDR. It was buried deep under the ground 20 meters from the tail location,” head of the National Search and Rescue Agency Daryatmo said on Thursday.
The FDR contains operational data from the airplane including graphics about the airplane’s flight height, speed, route, maneuvers and other data. It is expected to reveal the cause of the accident, which has remained unclear.
The Russian search and evacuation team, the Indonesian National Search and Rescue team and the National Commission for Transportation Safety (KNKT) had been searching for the FDR for weeks, but were not as lucky as local people.
“Probably because they are local people, they searched for it thoroughly,” Daryatmo said.
While the black box was found in bad condition, the flight data recorder was still in good condition.
“We have the device needed to read the data of the FDR,” Tatang Kurniadi, head of the KNKT, said on Thursday.
He said that it could be opened in three or four hours, but it would take up to 12 months to analyze the data.
