A soldier is in critical condition after being shot during a firefight in Mulia, Papua, Indonesian Military (TNI) officials said.

“I’ve just received a report that one of our soldiers, First Pvt.
Laode, has been shot and has been admitted to Mulia Hospital,”
Erwin Syafitri, the commander of the Cendrawasih Military Command, which
oversees military operations in Papua, said in Jayapura on Thursday.

The soldiers were attacked as they drove to Mulia, the capital of Papua’s Puncak Jaya district, Erwin said. Laode was riding in the truck when a shot rang out. The soldiers then exchanged fire with the unknown attackers, during which time, Laode was shot.

TNI soldiers were in pursuit of the shooters Thursday morning, Erwin said.

Laode will likely be transferred to a Jayapura hospital.

It is unknown who Laode’s attackers were, Erwin said.

Separatist groups have been historically responsible for the occasional bloody clash between security forces and armed groups in Indonesia’s easternmost province, according to the Indonesian government.

Some factions in Papua would like to see the province secede from Indonesia.
