The National Police has ordered increased security at all police headquarters across the country, after a suicide attack at Cirebon Police Headquarters shortly before Friday prayer.
“We condemn this attack. We have been ordered to increase security all police headquarters and for police to remain alert,” National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said.
Anton confirmed that the explosion was a suicide bomb attack, labeling the attack as “terrorist activity.”
“The bomb exploded shortly before Friday prayer began at the mosque at Cirebon Police Headquarters,” Anton said. “The suicide bomber, a man, hid the bomb on his body, switching it on at 12.20.”
The suicide bomber had obviously targeted the Cirebon Police chief and his officials, who were in the first row of the mosque, Anton said.
“He was dead at the scene. His body was badly damaged,” Anton said.
The body was taken to the local hospital for further examination.
“We don’t know his identity and the group he belonged to, but this is a terrorist attack,” Anton said, adding that at least 17 police officers including the Cirebon Police chief were injured and taken to hospital.
The head of Cirebon Police’s human resources unit was also injured in the attack, along with the traffic division head, administrative division head, civil officers and a cleric.
