Ambition is a powerful motivator; when it is combined with pedigree it turns into a catalyst for change. Still only 37, Erik Hidayat knows all about what its takes to lead as he campaigns for the leadership of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Organization (Hipmi).
His father, MS Hidayat, is currently the country’s Minister of Industry and once held the presidency of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). The fruit, as they say, does not fall far from the tree.
Erik is thus following in the illustrious footsteps of his father but is intent to cut his own path. After completing his university degree in the United Kingdom, he returned to Indonesia to help run the family business, PT Mitra Selaras Hutama (MSH). One of his first tasks was to revive the group’s property arm which had suffered from the 1998 financial crisis.
His interest in business, however, started much earlier while still in high school when he established a car wash and workshop with a friend.
“That first venture did not do well but it taught me some important lessons,” he said. “I learned that there are no short cuts to success.”
