Behind-the-scenes images have shown Adriana Lima modeling with her baby bump in the Pirelli Calendar 2013 – marking the first time a model so visibly expecting has posed for the iconic publication.
Lima announced she was expecting her second child with basketball player husband Marko Jarić back in March, and behind-the-scenes photographs from the shoot featured on Italian Vanity Fair’s Web site show the model posing with her baby bump visibly bared in front of the lens.
The 2013 edition of the annual trade calendar, which dates back to 1964 and has featured some of the world’s most beautiful women including Kate Moss, Eva Herzigova and Cindy Crawford, was shot in Brazil in May by acclaimed photojournalist Steve McCurry.
For the 2004 edition, pregnant model Esther de Jong illustrated the month of May with a minimal bump that was enhanced, but Lima has now set a new precedent.
And while the Pirelli Calendar is normally famed for its rather risqué and raunchy aesthetic, McCurry — who has won awards for his work in war zones – told vanityfair.it that fans can expect a “calendar of the soul.”
Other models posing for the 2013 edition include Petra Nemcova, Liya Kebebe and Isabeli Fontana.
It is worth noting that in the other behind-the-scenes shots the models are clothed, marking a difference to the calendar’s typical scantily clad aesthetic.
“I want to portray women who are sexy without being naked,” McCurry has been quoted as saying on liquida.it.
McCurry follows in the footsteps of photographers including Terry Richardson, Karl Lagerfeld and Bruce Weber in shooting the Pirelli Calendar.
