A businessman and two state officials were charged with criminal negligence related to the collapse of the Mahakam II bridge in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, police said on Saturday.
“According to the investigation results and evidence, three people have been named suspects by the East Kalimantan Police,” National Chief of Detectives Comr. Gen. Sutarman said.
The suspects were identified by initials as YS, an official with the public works office in Kutai Kartanegara, ST, a local official who dealt with technical matters related to the bridge, and MSF, from the construction firm Bukaka Tekhnik Utama, which was responsible for maintenance works.
The suspects were charged under articles 359 and 360 of the Criminal Code on negligence that leads to casualty, with a possible maximum sentence of five years in jail.
Twenty-four people died when the Mahakam II bridge collapsed on Nov. 26.
