The Prosperous Justice Party has appointed lawmaker Sohibul Iman as the new deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.
“Sohibul was once deputy chairman of [House of Representative] commission XI overseeing finance, it suits him,” said Mahfud Siddiq, the deputy secretary general of the party known as PKS, as quoted by Kompas.com.
The move comes after Anis Matta, the former deputy speaker for the House of Representatives, was named as the new leader of the party following the resignation of the former PKS president, Luthfi Hasan Ishaaq, who was detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission for his alleged involvement in a beef import graft case.
“Today I will submit my resignation letter to the House Speaker,” Anis said on Thursday. “Starting today, I’m no longer working [as lawmaker].”
Luthfi was accused of receiving Rp 1 billion ($103,000) in bribes through his staff Ahmad Fathanah. He was allegedly arranging a deal to grant Indoguna Utama a lucrative beef import quota. The commission will question Agriculture Minister Suswono — who is also a member of PKS — on this case next week.
