The Jakarta Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu Jakarta) summoned on Thursday representatives from TVOne and MetroTV for screening what the committee considered “Jokowi’s campaign, ahead schedule.”
“Both [TV stations] were here related to Prabowo’s advertisement about Jokowi — allegedly it is a campaign ahead of schedule,” Panwaslu Jakarta Chairman Ramdansyah said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Ramdansyah said the responsibility for the premature add should be placed on the broadcaster, and not on those who appear in the campaign ad.
“I don’t want to discuss the content, it’s not about the model or artist,” Ramdansyah said. “Today we want to see whether those that broadcast the ads knew that it was not campaign time.”
Despite this assertion, chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) Prabowo Subianto has also been summoned by Panwaslu for appearing recently in an ad with Jakarta gubernatorial candidate Jokowi Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on four private television stations. At the end of the ad, Prabowo says “Want Change? Vote for Jokowi-Basuki.”
The allegedly premature ad was reported by the campaign team of incumbent governor Fauzi Bowo-Nachrowi Ramli to Panwaslu, and accused Jokowi of campaigning ahead of schedule. The official campaign period is from Sept. 14 until Sept. 16.
If the two television stations are found to have violated the law, the ad manager might face a maximum sanction of 30 days in prison or Rp 1 million ($104) in fines.
