The Jakarta Transportation Office opened a one-way traffic flow system in the Pluit area of North Jakarta on Thursday, saying the scheme has already reduced traffic congestion by some 30 percent.
The one-way system began at 6 a.m, and includes Jalan Pluit Raya, Jalan Pluit Karang, Jalan Pluit Karang Barat, Jalan Pluit Karang Utara and Jalan Pluit Permai. Fifty office personnel were deployed to ensure the system functioned properly, said Udar Pristono, who runs the office.
“The result was fantastic,” Udar said. “The traffic congestion in the Pluit area has been reduced by 30 percent even though it has only been implemented for a day.”
Traffic started moving more quickly, he said, hitting up to 20 kilometers per hour from a previous average of 15 kph.
Before the system was in place, he said, there were two major congestion points: the intersection of Jalan Pluit Karang and Jalan Pantai Indah Kapuk, and the intersection of Jalan Pluit Karang Barat and Jalan Pluit Karang Utara.
Udar said that although the one-way system reduced congestion, some local residents resisted the plan. “It’s only normal that a new policy raises protests because it’s something new,” he said. “But I am convinced that with time, residents will get used to it and will enjoy the results: a better flow of the traffic in Pluit and Muara Karang [North Jakarta].”
Udar said his office was cooperating with the traffic department of the Jakarta Police and dozen of police officers were deployed to help implement the system.
The one-way system starts on Jalan Pluit Karang, going from the Pluit Barat Raya-Pluit Indah intersection to the Pluit Karang Barat-Mandara Permai intersection.
It also covers Pluit Karang Barat, from the Pluit Karang Barat-Mandara Permai intersection to the area between Pluit Karang Utara Raya and Pendaratan Ikan (Selatan/Utara). Finally, it covers Pluit Karang Utara Raya from the Pluit Karang Barat-Pendaratan Ikan intersection to the Pluit Barat Raya-Pluit Karang Utara Raya intersection.
No left turns
Vehicles are now prohibited from turning left at the Pluit Karang Timur-Pluit Karang intersection, the Karang Setia Raya-Pluit Karang intersection, and roads between Karang Cantik, Pluit Karang, Karang Cantik I, Pluit Karang and Pluit Karang Molek 2. The same prohibition applies at the intersections of Karang Elok 13, Karang Jelita Raya and Pluit Karang Timur.
No right turns
Cars can no longer turn right at the intersections of Pluit Karang Timur and Pluit Karang, Karang Indah 15 and Pluit Karang, Pluit Karang Sari and Pluit Karang, Pluit Karang Manis and Pluit Karang, Mandara Permai and Pluit Karang Barat, Karangasri 7 and Pluit Karang Barat, and Pendaratan Ikan and Pluit Karang Barat.
A no-entry sign will also be posted at the start of Pluit Karang Asri 1 for east-bound traffic and at Pluit Karang Utara for east-bound traffic.
The traffic scheme in Pluit follows the police’s successful attempt to alter the flow of traffic at the Kuningan and Mampang intersections in South Jakarta, and a similar scheme at the Santa intersection in Kebayoran Baru, also in South Jakarta.
