Seven alleged Persija Jakarta supporters have been arrested in connection with last Sunday’s deadly attack against rival Persib Bandung supporters, an officer said on Saturday.

Seven suspects, identified as “R.Y.”, “B.K.”, “A.R.”, “Z.N.”, “T.W.”, “B.P.”, and “I,” were allegedly involved in the May 27 attack at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, in Jakarta. Six of the football fans were charged with participating in a gang attack under Article 170 of Indonesia’s criminal code.

“I” was charged with violating the ITE (Electronic Information and Transaction) Law after posting inflammatory status updates on Facebook that could have spurred the violence, Toni Hermanto, director of general crimes with the Jakarta Police, told reporters.

“They were all arrested in Jakarta,” Toni said.

Three were killed in a brawl between rival football fans outside the Jakarta stadium. Seven others were injured. The fight reportedly started after a Persija supporter noticed that one spectator didn’t cheer when the home team took a 2-1 lead over fierce rivals Persib.

“When the score was 2-1, everyone burst into noisy celebration and sang [Persija’s] Jakmania song. But one person sat quietly, causing Bayu [one of the men] to get curious,” Herry Heryawan, a police officer, said.

The fans turned violent after noticing the man was wearing blue — Persib Bandung’s color, the officer said.

“Later, [Lazuardi] scratched his clothes and revealed a blue scarf. Someone shouted ‘there’s a Viking [the nickname of Persib supporters].’ [Lazuardi] ran but was blocked by T.W. and was attacked. The suspects kicked and punched him. We don’t know if they used weapons, because we don’t have the autopsy report,” he said.

It is unknown if the attackers are Jakmania members or just Persija fans.

“They knew each other and joined together in one group,” Toni said.

Jakarta Police are working to identify additional suspects as officers investigate the deaths of two other fans, the officer said.

Dani Maulana, 17, and Rangga Cipta Nugraha, 22, were also killed in the attack.

“The investigation is underway,” Toni said. “We have to compare autopsy results with witness testimonies to identify the suspects,” he said.
