The Jakarta chapter of the General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) has extended the registration deadline for new voters in the second round of the Jakarta gubernatorial, a commission executive said on Monday.
Those who did not register in the first round now have until Aug. 4 to do so if they want to vote in the Sept. 20 runoff election — six days after the original July 29 deadline.
Aminullah, the chairman of KPU Jakarta’s voter registration working group, said that after the Aug. 4 deadline, no more registrations would be accepted, as the ballot papers would be printed.
By late on Sunday, the original deadline, there were 19,691 new voters registered for the second round.
But Aminullah said these numbers are still subject to validation by the commission.
“After the registration is closed, officials at the polling station level should compile the list of new voters,” he said.
“The municipal and district KPU will conduct the validation of the data to ensure that there are no double registrations. We have already handed over the voters’ list for the first round to the municipal and district KPU to use in the validation process,” Aminullah said.
He explained that the final voters’ list will be determined “in a plenary meeting that will be attended by the Jakarta election supervision committee and the campaign teams of the two candidates.”
In the first round of the election on July 11, neither of the two candidates who won the most votes, incumbent Fauzi Bowo and Joko Widowo (with respective running mates Nachrowi Ramli and Tjahaya Purnama Basuki), won a majority, necessitating the September runoff election.
