Indonesia says it is committed to providing humanitarian aid to help Somalia cope with a famine caused by a prolonged drought and near continual war.

Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al-Jufri said the ministry had agreed to provide aid, along with a number of nongovernmental organizations.

He did not say what form of aid would be supplied, or the value.

Salim said he was concerned that 30,000 people had starved to death in the past three months, and that 13 toddlers died each day.

He acknowledged the efforts of local NGOs, such as the Indonesian Red Cross, some of which had been able to raise as much as Rp 20 billion ($2.34 million).
