Singapore. Zero  to 16 seeds of durian in one minute.

That is the record set by sales executive Aundrey Francis, 34, in a durian speed-eating contest yesterday at Jurong Point mall.

It was part of a series of fast moves, including beer-drinking and origami- folding, initiated by SingTel to accelerate interest here in the upcoming Formula One Singapore Grand Prix. The telco is the title sponsor of the event which will roar off in September.

For the durian contest, 10 competitors had to eat as much of the D13 variety, which has small to medium-sized seeds, as they could in one minute.

Francis, who won a $250 SingTel voucher, took part in the contest together with his father, Bose Francis, a professional fire-eater and star in the acclaimed Singapore film My Magic.

The son, who had no prior experience in speed-eating contests, said: ‘I joined for fun and because I love eating durians.’

He also set the first record for the Most Durian Eaten in One Minute in the Singapore Book of Records.

His feat will also be lodged with the Guinness World Records to see if it qualifies to be included.
