Surabaya. After a month on the run, Surabaya Council deputy speaker Musyafak Rouf was arrested on Tuesday.
Earlier this year the Supreme Court sentenced Musyafak to one-and-a-half years in prison for embezzling Rp 720 million ($75,600) from the Surabaya budget. The decision overturned a previous acquittal by the Surabaya District Court in November 2009.
“He was arrested by a joint team from the Attorney General’s Office, the East Java prosecutors’ office and the Surabaya prosecutors’ office, after he performed the dzuhur (noon) prayer at Al-Akbar Mosque in Surabaya,” East Java prosecutors’ office spokesman Mulyono said in Surabaya on Tuesday.
Musyafak was then escorted to the East Java prosecutors’ office for administrative purposes, and then to the Surabaya prosecutors’ office.
“It is the Surabaya prosecutors’ office that has the authority to sentence him to prison,” Mulyono said.
Musyafak, a National Awakening Party (PKB) politician, had run away when law enforcers were about to take him to prison on April 24.
