In the 2012 Olympic torch procession, Indonesia will be represented by four of its citizens, including football striker Bambang Pamungkas, entrepreneur Sandiaga Uno, City councilor Wanda Hamidah and activist Ika Trifisusanti.
“We are convinced that sports has the ability to unite people,” said Yoo Young-Kim, managing director of Samsung Electronics Indonesia, which is the event’s main sponsor. “Our aim in participating in the torch relay is to turn the Olympics into an event for all.”
The Indonesian team will carry the torch in Manchester on June 24, Yoo said. The torch relay itself last about 70 days.
“The opportunity that we are providing to the torch bearers from Indonesia reflects our appreciation for their achievements and concern in building a better Indonesian nation,” Yoo said.
At the 2008 Olympics, Samsung sponsored six Indonesian torchbearers to take part in the relay. They included basketball star Denny Sumargo and 2000 Olympics gold medalist Candra Wijaya.
The London Olympics are set to start on July 27.
