Incumbent Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo said that he expects to win the September 20 runoff election and wants to do so with dignity.
“I think every candidate wants to win the gubernatorial election,” Fauzi told Antara news agency on Tuesday. “And I want to win it with dignity.”
Fauzi claimed that he has witnessed how some have used ignoble means in which to win the people of Jakarta’s sympathies leading up to the second round of the election. He commented that the citizens of Jakarta would not be swayed by such methods as they are intelligent in selecting their leaders.
“In the end, the ones that decide are the residents of Jakarta,” he said. “Why do we have to use dishonorable techniques?”
Fauzi also said that Jakartans would not be influenced by issues of religion or any other negative matters surrounding the election.
The only other candidate that will compete in the second round of the election is Joko Widodo, known as popularly as Jokowi. During the first round of the election, Jokowi pulled out a slight victory over Fauzi.
The issue of Jokowi’s running mate Basuki “Ahok” Tjahayapurnama’s Chinese origin and religion have been used as weapons against their campaign leading up the second round of the election.
Recently, the Jokowi-Ahok ticket has been shaken by a statement made by the Jakarta Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) that asserted they violated an election regulation by campaigning ahead of schedule.
