An Indonesian police officer turned Bollywood lip-synching sensation announced on Thursday his bid to run for deputy mayor of Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, in next year’s mayoral election.

Norman Kamaru said he would run as an independent candidate alongside Elnino Mohi, a member of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) representing Gorontalo province.

“The candidacy is true,” Norman told Indonesian news portal Detik.com. “[We’re] planning to take part in the 2013 regional election. I’ve been paired [with Elnino], to become his deputy.”

The local elections commission would decide next month whether the pair was eligible to run for the election, he said.

“Hopefully we can pass [the preliminary selection],” he said.

Briptu Norman, as he was popularly known, was a first brigadier of the police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) in Gorontalo.

He shot to fame last year after a YouTube video of him dancing and lip-synching the Bollywood song “Chaiyya-Chaiyya” went viral on the Internet.

Norman was also in the headlines when a group of police officers interrupted the filming of a video for his new song, “Cinta Gila” (“Crazy Love”) in North Sulawesi. The police said Norman, who was on leave for the Idul Fitri holiday, had not secured his superior’s permission to shoot the video.

Norman tendered his resignation in September last year but the police rejected it. In early December, however, he was fired because he had reportedly been absent for two months.
