Magetan, East Java. An officer with East Java’s Magetan Police was sentenced on Friday to 12 years in jail for fatally shooting his friend after they quarreled in a local cafe in April.

The sentence is heavier than the five years in jail sought by prosecutors.

The Magetan District Court decided that First Brig. Andika Surya Kurniawan was guilty of violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code of premeditated murder, which carries a maximum sentence of the death penalty.

“Our verdict is indeed higher than [that demanded] by prosecutors, because during the trial, the defendant has been proven validly and convincingly guilty to the primary charge [premeditated murder],” judge Warsito said after the hearing on Friday.

Andika fatally shot Fauzi, reportedly a civilian friend of his, after they fought at the back terrace of Kafe 76 in Magetan on Apr. 12.
