Mentalist Deddy Corbuzier received the prestigious Merlin Award from the International Magicians Society during a banquet on Tuesday.
He is the first Indonesian to receive the award, which bills itself as the magicians’ equivalent of the Oscars. Previous winners include David Copperfield and Siegfried and Roy.
“We honor gifted magicians who have amassed a body of distinct and creative work. Deddy Corbuzier was selected out of 100 magicians worldwide,” said Tony Hassini, chief executive of the US-based group.
Deddy dedicated the award to Indonesia. “This is not only a point of personal pride, but it’s for the country as well.”
Deddy has hosted numerous magic shows on TV, and he predicted that Spain would win the 2010 World Cup long before Paul the Octopus did.
