Pekanbaru. A graft defendant who was involved in a shooting range construction project for the upcoming National Games (PON) in Riau, received two years and six months in prison for his role in bribing a local legislator.

Rahmat Sahputra, who was the site operational administrative manager of the state-owned construction company Pembangunan Perumahan, allegedly bribed a local council member to “smooth” deliberations to revise a bylaw allocating an additional budget for the shooting range.

“We [find] the defendant guilty and sanction him to serve 2.5 years in jail and Rp 50 million [$5,200] in fines,” presiding judge Krosbin Lumban Gaol said on Friday.

Prosecutors said Rahmat gave Rp 900 million in bribes to a Riau Councilor Member to revise the bylaw. The money came from several National Games construction companies, including Pembangunan Perumahan, Adhi Karya and Wijaya Karya. The Rp 900 million in cash was only half of the total “working fee” of Rp 1.8 billion requested by Riau legislative members to revise the bylaw.
Krosbin said that the defendant committed joint corruption with members of the Riau legislative council. The sanction is lighter than the 3.5 years they’d originally sought.

Rahmat said he would mull over the ruling before deciding whether or not to file an appeal.

The Corruption Erradication Commission, or KPK, has named 10 Riau Council Members as suspects for drafting the graft-tainted bylaw, including Drian Ali, Teuku Muhazzar, Zulfan Hery, Syarief Hidayat, M. Roem Zein, Turoechan Ashari and Abubakar Sidik.

The KPK has also named the head of Riau’s sport agency Lukman Abbas, his subordinate Eka Dharma Putra and an employee of construction firm Pembangunan Perumahan Rahmat Syahputra as suspects.
