The coins collected from all around the country in support of Prita Mulyasari were undergoing a final count on Monday.
The counting was taking place at Jalan Langsat 1/3A in the Kebayoran Baru area, South Jakarta. The cutoff for donations is 9 p.m. Monday night.
Prita’s lawyer, Slamet Yuwono, said Prita may attend the handover event after the counting is completed.
“She will probably be there after the counting is finished. I will have to confirm first,” he said.
According to Slamet, the coins will be donated to social causes, for example, to help people who are fighting similar legal battles to Prita.
The coins have been gathered at Jalan Langsat since Monday. They came from various organizers in Indonesia. Coins collected from the organizer’s house alone in Jati Padang, South Jakarta, amounted to Rp 195 million ($20,500).
The public support followed a civil court decision that Prita must pay Rp 204 million in damages to Omni Hospital for allegedly defaming doctors in an email to friends complaining about her treatment.
Heribertus Hartojo, who heads Omni’s legal team, said the hospital was ready to drop its civil lawsuit and the fine imposed on Prita.
Prita’s lawyers have said they will appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court.
