Phnom Penh. At least five protesters in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh were hurt by police trying to block them from marching to the local offices of the World Bank and the European Union.
Those injured on Wednesday, all women, were among about 100 people demanding land titles they said they were promised after being evicted from their homes. Witnesses say riot police hit and kicked them.
The protesters say they were residents of Phnom Penh’s Boueng Kak lake area whose land was awarded by the government to a Chinese company for commercial development with a hotel, office buildings and luxury housing.
