The Home Affairs Ministry has refused to reinstate Mochtar Muhammad, the suspended mayor of Bekasi, until there is a final and binding verdict in his ongoing corruption case.

Reydonnyzar Moenek, a ministry spokesman, said on Friday that Mochtar’s acquittal by the Bandung Anti-Corruption Court last October was not the final word in the case because the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) was mounting an appeal.

He was speaking in response to Mochtar’s call on Friday for Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi to reinstate him.

Mochtar was charged with four counts of corruption, including bribing officials to win a prestigious environmental award, using public money for personal expenses such as cars and shopping, and paying off auditors, resulting in at least Rp 5.5 billion ($611,000) in losses to the state.
