Denpasar. Custom officers in Bali have arrested an Italian man for trying to smuggle in 1.4 kilogram of hashish, while police in Bogor have detained a resident caught in possession of 28 kilograms of cannabis.
Made Wijaya, the head of the customs office at the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, said his staff had arrested Italian national Pieretio Daniele, 33, who landed from Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
Wijaya declined to provide further details, saying the investigation, including an effort to ascertain the drugs’ source, is ongoing.
A source at the office said Daniele had come onboard a Malaysian Airlines flight and drew the attention of customs personnel because he appeared restless.
“As soon as he disembarked, he continued to look left and right as if observing the surroundings,” said the source, who declined to be named.
A scan of Daniele’s luggage showed a solid mass hidden behind the baggage lining. A physical check on the bag produced 1.43 kilograms of hashish, which officials estimated to be worth about Rp 650 million ($71,000) on the street.
Meanwhile, police arrested Wawan Sutiawan, 31, at his home in Cimahpar, North Bogor, on Wednesday evening, according to Adj. Comr. Heppy Habafi, who heads the city police’s antidrug squad.
A total of 28 kilograms of cannabis was found at a rented house in Harjasari village, South Bogor, while another 47 kilograms are believed to have already been sold by the suspect, Heppy said.
