An angry mob attacked a TransJakarta bus on Friday after it fatally hit a 10-year-old boy in front of a mosque on Jalan Mampang Prapatan Raya, South Jakarta.
“The victim’s name was Adam, 10 years old. Yes, he died at the scene,” Mampang Police Chief Comr. Siswono said at the site of the incident on Friday.
Siswono said the victim’s remains have been brought to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta, while the TransJakarta bus driver, identified only as W.S., has been escorted to the Jakarta Police headquarters.
The incident took place at about 11:30 a.m. An eyewitness, Yayah, 38, said the boy was crossing the street with his mother but appeared to have been left behind.
“It was when Friday prayers were about to start. I saw that the child was going to cross the street with his mother, but then it looked like he was left behind and got hit by the bus. The child died at the scene. I saw his hand still clutching a Rp 5,000 bill,” Yayah said.
A mob angered by the incident then attacked the bus, resulting in broken windows and damages to its body. It also caused a long traffic jam in the area.
In February last year, an elementary school student was also killed after being hit
by a TransJakarta bus also in the Mampang Prapatan area.
After the death of the boy — identified as Muhammad Rizky
Firmansyah, 9, a student at SD 02 Pagi Mampang — residents blocked off
TransJakarta Corridor VI with flower pots and yellow flags, which
signify a community or family in mourning. (Read last year’s story 9-Year-Old Dies After Being Hit by TransJakarta Bus)
