A nostalgic concert titled “Indonesia ’80s,” which showcased the biggest hits of that decade, featured an unplanned guest appearance by aspiring politician Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama at Tennis Indoor Senayan on Saturday evening.
Joko Widodo’s running mate in this week’s Jakarta gubernatorial election was spotted in the crowd by Tony Wenas of the band Solid ’80s and asked to join them. Ahok joined in singing “We are the Champions” by Queen.
“It was spontaneous,” Tony said after the show. “It didn’t have any political meaning. We simply wanted to entertain the crowd.
“If we had seen Foke [incumbent governor Fauzi Bowo] in the audience, we would have asked him to come up as well.”
The election is scheduled for Thursday.
